Punctuation Apostrophe

Punctuation is a system in which marks are used in writing to indicate pauses and division of sentences.

The Apostrophe is used :

(1) To show possession or belonging. The position of the apostrophe indicates singular or plural possession. For example,

  • The girl's dress is pink. (referring to one girl)
  • The girl's dresses are pink. (referring to many girls)
  • (2) To show joint possession. For example, Mary and Mary's mother won the award.

    (3) In contractions or omission of leters. For example,

  • It's (It is) hot today.
  • Don't (Do not) litter the park.
  • Don't , e'er,  I've.
  • (4) To form the plural of letters and figures.

  • Add two 5's and four 2's.
